The Occasional Road Tripper

From Amarillo we drove to Moab, UT to visit Arches National Park. Another long drive. We ran into all kinds of weather, from wind, rain and even snow. This was in New Mexico. It was 32 degrees there. I don't drink my beer that cold. At any rate, we got to Moab late in the afternoon. I forgot about the time zone changes, so I thought that we would be there later than we did, just by an hour. The next day we set out for Arches National Park, just four miles from our hotel. Getting that senior National Park Pass was a stroke of genius. Free admission for life. My ancestors would be proud. Arches NP is one of the five national parks in Utah. We've visited two others, Zion and Bryce Canyon. We'll hit the rest next year, maybe. Anyhow, Arches was spectacular. We hiked about eight miles in the park. Not too bad for my knees. This is the view on the Park Avenue Trail. We hit this trail right after sunrise. Here's a picture of the sunrise. This was captured on a view point on the main road. Balanced Rock Double Arches. Park Avenue Trail Sand Dune Arch.

We are in San Antonio for a few days before leaving on our road trip. While there we met up with our friend Nars sisters, Lita and Ophie and Lita's husband Ed. We had lunch together in Universal City at a Filipino buffet. What a great time we had. It's as if we have known each other for years. Thanks, Nars for getting me Lita's contact info. Here's a picture of us at lunch. That's Lita, Ophie and my wife Pam in the front. I'm standing with Ed (on the right).
Our first stop on our road trip was Amarillo. Long drive, about ten and a half hours. After checking in at the hotel, Pam and I headed for The Cadillac Ranch, an art installation in a pasture. It is one of my bucket list items. It doesn't look like much from I-40 but up close it is truly amazing, ten Cadillacs (1949-1963) are buried nose first into the ground. People come from all over the world to see this and spray paint new art work onto the cars. The next day we drove to Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo. Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the US, after the Grand Canyon. Palo Duro was suggested by our new friend, Ed. Well worth the time. We hiked around the canyon for several hours. Beautiful spot. My wife and I left Hawai'i on March 29 for California to attend my niece's baby shower (her first). Here is my niece Nicole and her husband Garrett. They've been married a year and a half now and the baby girl is due in June. They already picked the name Aria.
